Why would someone want to cause you to feel shame?

Question

For example: If you don't have much but your comfortable with it (ie. because I'm in school) and you don't feel the need to pretend why would someone try to make you feel bad about what you have?

I also want to add that the person without many material things has alot of self-esteem (note: it didn't come from stuff but rather from the development of a talent) idk if this matters.

btw - i'd like to add the fact that it was my dad who did it.
