Question:

Why would the edge of leaves of the hydrangea plant turn brown or get dry as if they had a sun burn?

The bright purple bloom and the newer white bloom both have sunburned edges.

It could be a problem with too low of humidity, particularly if this is an indoor specimen.  It could also be getting damaged if in a high-traffic area and people/animals are constantly brushing up against it.  Try moving the plant (if possible) to a lower traffic area and misting the plant (if outdoors, make sure the plant is appropriately watered so the soil remains moist - don't allow it to dry out, but don't let it get too soggy, either).
