Why would the leafs give the habs permission to talk with sundin?

Simple... they dont want him, or want him to have a chance to win a CUP! Why else?

And as LAE said.. maybe a sign and trade deal is in the making!

LAE- Wilson likes Tucker! He wanted to trade for him last season at the deadline. He isnt going anywhere!

because they want to make a deal with the habs. it's been said. it's in the air. that's the only reason for this. they want to get something out of this.

cliff fletcher has been talking to bob gainey about mats sundin even before this day to try and get something from the habs. so yeah. it's all a big *** plot to get rid of OUR captain and the face of the leafs, and all i can say is f the haters cause he's the best thing for this team, and now i have to go and cheer for him being a habs. i hope to god this doesn't happen, but better montreal than say uhm an american team...i don't hate detroit, but anything, habs red wings is better than any other american team. i don't think i could handle it if he went south.

trade mccabe to new york, or get rid of tucker, but don't get rid of mats.

i know. i know he wants tucker, but unfortunately the whole of maple leafs brass wants to buy him out so here's to hoping that happens you know. i don't like ron wilson and i don't care what he wants. i hope that all the marlies get called up next year and that he plays them all and he does his job of "molding" so called "young" players. goodluck to him.

also how crazy is it that the sharks still want pavel kubina. TAKE HIM!!! he has wilson's blessing. no one here cares. send him down. my god it can't be soon enough. i don't even care if he's good next season. he's like hal gill. you can say leafs fans like winning or players who can help the team but they can also tell which players don't fit on this team because most of the time they act uncomfortable and that is pavel kubina so trade him. it's not like i hate him i just think he needs to be on a better team and on a team with better chemistry. ron wilson can bless all the leafs players he wants as long as they get traded!!! minus sundin.

Mats told Fletcher he would like to explore other opportunities and that Montreal was a place he saw a fit.

Montreal and Sundin will negotiate until a deal gets done, or July 1st.

IF Montreal and Sundin reach an agreement, Toronto will trade Sundin's negotiation rights to Montreal for a young player or draft pic.  This way neither team 'loses'

IF Montreal and Sundin don't reach an agreement by July 1st........Sundin is free to sign anywhere....and Fletcher says that Sundin has received an offer from Toronto for him to consider.

They trade his rights to Montreal for some stuff, then sign him back on July 1st..

Several reasons. 1) the Leafs are starting to rebuild there team from the ground up. Sundin, Kaberle, and several of there older players are on there way out. They are making room to bring in more youthful, younger talent. Lets face it, with the existing team they haven't even made the playoffs. Time to make a change. Any time you can deal a bonafied firstliner for young and strong talent, that will be team players, you have to do it. not that Mats isn't a great player.....because he is, maybe he just needs a change of senery. Overall i feel the Leafs are making the right decision.
