I am currently watching the men's quarters and the commentators briefly mentioned that. I loved the days of the serve and volley and quick points. Wimbledon is starting to be way too much like the French Open( which I definitely hate as a major). Thanks for letting me vent .......................

  1. While I agree with you totally, I kind of understand it.

If you think of all the advancements in racket technology since tennis was great (my opinion is it was best in the 80's) it'd be hard to play the same style, by slowing down the courts a little it helps get that old vibe again

McEnroe couldn't handle the power of the "young kids," at the time he retired, since he was such a great serve and volleyer and he couldn't handle the power the up and coming players modeled their playing styles towards the people who were winning when they were growing up.

Long answer for a short question... but I got to vent as well.

  2. yah, they would because it plays into the style of the game today.

i agree with you...serve and volley game in painfully absent these days.  heck, even a good all-court game is absent. what happened to player's like connors, who would take advantage of every short ball and get to the net? i see plenty of opportunity for someone with a great, all-court game to create openings to get into the net. they wouldn't even need to serve-and-volley, but just know how to create the opening from the baseline to drive the snot out of the ball and get their A$$ to the net where they can end the point.

these players today...their games seem so 1 deminsional and boring. sure, they have good serves and great ground strokes, but let's create some excitement ala Boris Becker 1985.

  3. They're tired of seeing Americans (e.g. Sampras, McEnroe, Williams Sisters) do well at their Tournament.

Among the current players, who has the slower surface hurt the most?  Undoubtedly, the hard serving Andy Roddick.
