Opening night...Packers vs. Vikings in Lambeau.  Normally, that was going to be the night they retired Favre's jersey in a halftime ceremony.  The Packer fans would not stomach, nor can the Packers front office, the idea of Brett Favre showing up that night in a Vikings uniform and beating them.  

That right there is why the Packers are willing to pay him not to play.

The Packers will play Brett $20 million not to play so they can make money off his rights as a Packer, jerseys, appearences, autograph signings, etc.  The Packers also don't want Brett to play for a division rival i.e. Minnesota or Chicago (both who need quaterbacks) so they would rather pay him to stay at home, when you look at the big picture it actually makes a little more sense, if the Brett gets reinstated and just "holds the clipboard" the Packers would be be paying him $12 million this year and if he chose to $13 million next year, if they pay hime to stay retired, management dosen't have to worry about the media circus, Brett stays home so you won't have the vets. who think he should be the starter upset (so no quaterback conterversy) and when Rodgers does get hurt (and he will hasen't made it one season yet without being injured and he never made a start) Brett won't be there to come of the bench and replace Rodgers (again no quaterback conterversy) so with management commited to moving on to the future this is the only way to minimize the Brett Favre saga, as least in their minds.

Because the Packers have been looking to the future and they want Rodgers to be that future at the QB position. He only has a year left on his contrtact, and if they don't give him a commitment he will just go somewhere else and play instead of sitting around every summer wondering if Favre is going to come back or not.

Even in Green Bay, fans are a very fickle bunch.

They whine and complain now that Favre won't be the starter, but after Rodgers starts throwing TDs by the end of the season they couldn't care less about Favre.

They don't have room for him on their roster.  They drafted his replacement a few years ago when he threatened to retire.  Didn't they draft 2 more QB's this year when he actually retired?  Someones gotta go if they have 4 which means they wasted picks on someone or they can tell Brett to go home since he is just going to retire again next year.
