seriously how? How would hitler have conquered britain. Their surface fleet was destroyed. Their air force was destroyed. Even without that they only had river barges to carry troops across the channel. Are you seriously suggesting their river barges would have got past the home fleet. Why do you think we had so little troops on the continent compared to you. Because they were defending the beaches. There were mines, flamethrowers and petrol bombs all over the beaches. As for the U-boats, we had cracked the german enigma. We knew were they were, by 42 it was our destroyers that were hunting them down.

So please tell me why if it weren't for the US britain would be speaking german.

  1. That's just an over-the-top way of arrogant people to say we helped. There is no way that a people like the Brits, that hung in there against the Blitz and the Battle of Britain would ever have permitted the Germans to conquer them! America did help though. FDR managed to get around the folks in Congress to get supplies to Britain through "Lend-Lease" and we did get our troops there as soon as we could. What I learned from my elders and from studying history, Germany made serious mistakes. Among the first was attacking Great Britain. We all came together to fight that monster and I think both countries helped to reduce the number of our citizens killed by our cooperation.  I've heard the same thing being said in recent times about various other wars by the same type of loudmouths -all they do is change the language they say we would be speaking! Naturally, this only happens when we dis-agree with their viewpoint on a subject. Madmen like Hitler and Osama Bin Laden will come and go but, Great Britain and the U. S. will be hanging in there. And we will forever be listening to the know-it-alls saying you'd be speaking.......if it weren't for.....(fill in the blanks)

  2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_nucl...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H-Bomb

This is one thing that England did not have and Germany and US did. The Nuclear bomb was the turning point of the war and Germany was know to have such technologies or at least had done detailed investigation into it by Dec 1938.

Yeah England probably would not be speaking Germany right now but they sure could have been bombed into the stone age.

  3. well, for starters, the U.S. supplied Britain with simply mind-boggling amounts of food and raw supplies.  without those britain wouldn't have been able to stand up to germany for long

along with the supplies just think about it.  germany controlled virtually all of europe.  with that kind of production, it would only be a matter of time until the british fleet was overwhelmed.  even with your empire, japan would have dealt with the offensive capabilities of australia and india, leaving britain to singlehandedly fight off all of europe. it just wouldn't work.  As far as the USSR goes, I don't know.  I don't think it could have single-handedly tackled germany without significant U.S. intervention.  britain has never had a large army, and it wouldn't be able to invade germany by any means.  so, in the end, germany and the USSR might come to a stalemate, but Britain would very likely have fallen.  that's a fact.

also, germany's entire air force and surface fleet were not killed by english fighters and ships alone.  the U.S. had a lot to do with that.

as far as mines on the beach and such, germany had those too.  see how much they helped?

  4. "If it weren't for the US britain would be speaking german" is just a bit of rudeness, said by SOME Americans when they've lost an argument with a Brit.  (The equivalent to Canadians is, 'We could bomb the stuffing out of you!')  Don't get me wrong, Americans are fine people and the best friends to have in the world; just a few of them make boorish comments such as the above - Don't let these few spoil your impression of the rest of them.

  5. Even if Hitler dominated all of Eurasia, Britain would have still spoke English.  It was never Hitler's idea to go to war with Britain and he had no real desire to fight Britain let alone invade it.  Even in June 1940 he appealed to Britain to make peace, keep their empire, and have a good day.  Britain stood resolute because it knew the American bankers were not going to abandon their investment.  Had they been isolated, the Brits would have probably come to peace with Hitler and kept their empire.

As far as the conquering of Britain that would most likely never happen.  First of all people forget the absolute superiority of the British fleet.  German Admiral Raeder made it known to Hitler in the mid 30's that Germany would not be ready to have a surface fleet to fight the Brits until 1948 at the earliest.  By 1940, Germany had abandoned their naval Z plan and tried to quickly make up a sealane commerce raiding navy.  That too was not even going to be fully ready before the mid 40's.  Even with air superiority, which was a big if considering Goerings stupidity, the naval landing would have to deal with the entire British home fleet.  Finally another 18 divisions of men were going to have to be hostage to the seas and the Britain for god knows how long.  All of this in mind, added with the weight of Russia in the east, meant Britain was not going to be invaded.  No matter where America was.

Had the war in the east finished in the n**i favor and America not entered the war, Britain would then have sued for peace since obviously at some point now Hitler could take his time to launch a full invasion should he choose to.  Even then, the British might have acutally been better off it could be argued rather than bankrupt and losing its entire empire in the process.

  6. Germany was well aware of the above. First of all, their navy and air force were not destroyed in 1940 - which was the year they planned to invade Britain.

The idea was to gain air supremacy, and they were extremely close in getting it. Once they controlled the air, it would have been possible to keep the grand fleet at bay long enough to launch an invasion and set up a solid beachhead.

The petrol bombs you mention was amongst others a piping system to put the sea on fire. Later experiments showed it didn't work.

What happens after an invasion is a mystery we don't know and cannot know. It is likely that a very large force would have to cross the channel to conquer Britain.

The Soviet army was right on the border fully prepared for an attack. It is possible that once the Wehrmacht was busy in England, the Red Army would invade and occupy Berlin.

Which makes an interesting scenario: the German Army in the UK, and the Red Army in Berlin. With little prospect for the German Army to retreat.

  7. I believe german is one of the most useless languages we have today. They don't even speak German in Germany. Once my family was there on vacation, we were pulling into a parking garage and we had to stop at one of those toll booths to pay to get in. My father said "three people" in German and they laughed in his face and told him he was ignorant to speak that language in a country where everyone spoke English anyways. They continued to mimick and mock him until they finally took the money and we sped off. So regardless of whether Americans somehow brought the language to britain it was pointless seeing as how it is nearly dead in my eyes....

  8. You seem to forget that Canada was right in there at the beginning and also supplied to Britain huge amounts of food and ammunition plus men equipment and training from 1939 onward rather than 1942

when the Americans came into the war. Everything the Americans lent to the Brits was paid for in full it wasn't given to them.I suggest that a lot of people posting here should actually do some research into the history of WWII and not just from some book their own countries' historians have written but other people's versions of events. It might be a big eye opener for a lot of them.
