  2. Because salt draws moisture out of what ever it touches. That is what was used in the days before refrigerators to keep meats, etc from spoiling. Meat was salted and covered and it would keep throughout the year as the salt pulled out the moisture, just like dehydration machines nowadays.  

  3. The salt of the saltwater would suck out more water in your body, they use salt to make meat into jerky so it would be the same kind of effect.

  4. Salt acts as an absorbent to water.
