...stay in the right-most lane on a multi-laned highway when there is a stopped vehicle(s) on the shoulder? Wouldn't it make sense to move over 1 lane to avoid a potentially fatal accident?

  1. People who don't get over for broken down cars on the shoulder when there's nobody in the lane to their left are often the same people who camp in the left lane going 5 under the speed limit and clog up the entire freeway.

Some drivers just don't pay attention to anything (like their mirrors or other cars on the road etc.,) and no one ever MAKES them pay attention so they just continue to drive like clueless idiots.  I'd vote for the Police to be able to ticket drivers who camp in the left lane going under the speed limit in a heartbeat if someone could get it on a ballot

  2. In fact, many US states have passed laws that REQUIRE you to move to the left if there is a police or service vehicle parked on the shoulder.

  3. People don't seem to think of these things.

I'm not sure why but a lot of people seem to become tunnel-vision dominated sheep on the road. They pick a lane and stick to it - without considering risks to either side.

They don't consider a door could swing open or someone step out...or even the car go to leave without seeing them. Believe me - it happens.

People even do the same past accidents - I've attended them with the fire service on 3 lane freeways where we might be the far side lane - and still, people will pass right next to you (which is harrowing when you're trying to very carefully cut a door off with the jaws of life...!) without any care at all...unless the accident scene is physically blocked with a police car or the like.

We get taught to park the rescue truck in a "shielding" position diagonally across the accident scene to work behind (its not always practical though) simply because it is the only way to herd some idiot drivers away!! And even then, diagonally because of the risk the fools will still hit the truck (it actually happened once!) - so they'll go off to an angle hopefully (and not push the truck into where we're working).

Drivers need more common sense and more awareness of whats around them.

  4. Because most people on the road dont know how to drive in the first place, its getting worse and worse, they need to raise the license age up to 18 at least(mind u this is coming for a 21) and also i think that people dont know how to judge there cars! i have been driving since i was a  kid like 12, my old man would teach me in a empty lot and now i have no problem driving  my 02 suburban( my first car was a 88 caddy). If i really want i can weave in traffic w/o problems. if people could judge and followed the signs i think that would help with the crappy traffic everywhere and all the time!

  5. Yep, you would think. Most people only pass their drivers examine. This doesn't mean it makes them smarter, nor wiser.

  6. The new law states that you will need to move over for safety reason to both you and the other driver.
