Why would you expect edema when blood pressure rises, but not when decreases?

  1. Just like a river will overspill its banks when it gets full, the bloodstream can get too full as well.  When fluid overflows (for multiple reasons) out of the blood into tissue, we call this edema.  At lower blood pressures, this overflow is less likely to take place.

  3. Increase in hydrostatic pressure forces fluid out of capillaries.  Flow of water is determined by both hydrostatic and oncotic pressures.
