Why would you expect edema when the osmotic pressure decreases, but not when it rises?

  1. Osmotic pressure is the pressure that you need to stop water from flowing into a certain area. If that pressure decreases, water will flow in and you will have edema. If the pressure increases, it will be even harder for water to flow in.  


  2. Think of a garden hose.

    You turn on the hose ( pressure ) and then you shut it off.( lower pressure)

    The water flows down to the bottom of the hose ( near the faucet) and sits there.

    Just like in your body. When the pressure drops the fluid sits in your hands,feet, ankles,calves causing edema.
