Why would you say that Capitalism does not work?

It does work to some extent however the price mechanism being the only decision mechanism causes problems. The "invisible hand" has no conscience and so the weak and infirm can be 'left out in the cold' and stave/go without. Some other action needs to occure to care for those unable to look after themselves.

Other shortcommings exist too but this is the main one.

I can't think of a single answer. You should change it to socialism, then I could think of a million reasons.

Capitalism would work. Mixed economies do not.
