Why would you want to name your child after a celebrity or give him/her the most popular name at the time?

I recall whenever Jada Pinkett, Shaniah Twain, and "Sheridan" on Passions, became famous, and Britney Spears named her child "Jayden", and so many more... all of the children started being named Jada, Shaniah, Sheridan, Jayden, and variations of each. I've seen tons of names on here that are nothing but celebrity names... or Gweneth Paltrow's Apple, and so on... why name your child a celebrity name or baby name?

Also- why name your child the most popular name at the time? Do you really want your child to be in the same classroom with 10 other kids named Jayden?

Whenever I have children, I will be using all family names, unique family names, most from the early 1800s and before, and I'd never share them online since people do see a name and then before you know it there are 100 million people with the same name.

I just want thoughts on the subject, I mean you can name your kid whatever you want... I'm just trying to make sense of it.

  1. this is funny ..it reminds me that in the past i had my heart set out on my boys name and thought it was very rare but now everywhere i turn someone else is naming their son that...i am like i hope it doesn't become too popular like the aidens..etc. i am still naming my son that same name but  sometimes it boggles my mind how people love to have the coolest name..well i guess you can't change the world and i learned that no matter how many ppl have my baby boys name i would still love my very own son just for who he is and not just for the name.

  2. I agree for the most part with what you have stated. I love the name Shiloh, would name a daughter this were I going to have more children and I love the way the Jolie-Pitts are raising their children. Unlike a couple like the Cruises who I believe are ruining their child. Your children are your most precious gifts and should be given a name you and your husband love, bottom line.

  3. I can understand your point. My son's name first name is very common (John) but then I added a twist with his middle name (Brodrick). I wanted it to be different so I left the "e" out of it. You can be different but not out of this world just by changing a few letters. And I am sorry, but names l ike Coco or Apple, lets get real, these kids are already going to be messed up by having famous parent, lets just add on to the problems of giving them a funny name.

  4. Why are you so Broken, in heart, thought or money......oh!!! in name.

You ask WHY? Because they want the kid to be known and become well known when he/she grows up to be a super person or superstar.

There is also another group who are very creative and create very funny name and spelling to get attention and be special.

    What do you think, NOW?

  5. Well, personally if there is a name I like I don't worry if someone else is going to name their child that, or anything of that sort. Sure there are going to be other people out there with that name. I don't want to look back down the road 5 or 10 years and say man I wish I had named my kid... instead of ....

  6. LOL...when I was younger I wanted to use "unusual" names for any children I was to have. My thought at the time (and shared with others who also wanted "unusual" names) was so that my child could be "unique" and stand out. I'm glad I waited and outgrew that notion.

Now that I am older and having kids, we've opted on traditional family names. My thought now is that my kids don't need weird or popular or unusual names to be unique. My kids are unique in their own way.

  7. In my opinion, you should choose a name that is meaningful to you, whatever that may be.  My husband and I named our daughter Faith.  I love my daughter's name and it fits her well!

  8. Some people (not all) are obsessed with being "trendy".  They like to do whatever is popular at the time.  I guess because it gives them a sense of fitting in or being cool.  I'll never understand it either.  Its sad really.  I guess if its a name you really love, it doesn't matter if 5,000,000 other people have it too.

  9. I'm not one of those people - my husband refuses to name our kid anything that is in the top 100 baby names haha. We try to think of more original names, but things that wont be too difficult for people, like you don't want something that no one has ever heard of before and will have a really hard time spelling. I have a unique name and usually I like it, but it gets really old when people are constantly saying it wrong, spelling it wrong, or calling me by completely different names.

    My name is Cherise (sure-eece)

  10. My kids are both named after people in history who have done something or stood up for something I believe in.  I love that they have that connection with history.

  11. LOL!  I'm like you; I'll use family names, OR really old names.  Also, I've shared some of my names on here, and sometimes I wonder if someone takes them...  I think one woman "stole" the name Miriam from me just the other day :D ...though I guess you can never know...

Going back to the celebrity names (and ignoring what I just said) I really like the name Rosamund - I got it from Rosamund Clifford (historical significance) but really love that an actress like Rosamund Pike shares the same name.

  12. Not to nit pick but "Shaniah" is spelt "Shania".

I can see why you would name a child after your favorite acress, or singer from when you were a child. It's almost like a trip down memory lane. As for naming your children after a famous person's child, as long as its not FAR out there, then I don't see why it's such a big deal. Also a lot of celeberties use alias, so half the time its not even their real names.

As for most popular, I can agree with you. After you hear the name when you go to the grocery store, and when you are searching on the internet, ect.. the names begin to annoy me. Like the "Aiden, Jayden, Brayden" theme.

As are you I'm going to name my children old fashioned, elegant, and famility tradition names.

I tend to also think its younger (teens) who are going for these trends. Then you also really can't tell anything from Y!A any way because there are 12,13,14 year old girl who come on pretending like they are having children. (NOT ALL!)

    :)

  13. My mother in law was names Shirley after Shirley temple

She tells people that, she like the fact

My father was name Robert after an actor with the fist name

The reason why, was because they lived in an Irish neighborhood, with a very common Irish last name.  My grandmother wanted a name people knew, and would not be several with the same first and Middle and last name.  Did not work
