Why wouldn't my child qualify for SSI payments, if she is in Special Education?

  1. Unfortunately, qualifying for SSI is still based largely on the IQ of the applicant. The cutoff remains at 70, so if your daughter's IQ falls below 70, then she will qualify. However, even if her IQ is even 1 point higher (71), she would not qualify.

    With the rise of Autism diagnoses, I would hope that they change this outdated format soon.


  2. SSI & SSDI payments are not based on IQ. It has alot  to deal with the physical or mental defecits a person has and how those defecits impair their ability to function in a normal daily life. (work, adl's, driving, medical appointments etc)

  3. Income is also a big qualifier. If your income is too high, your child still will not qualify, regardless of IQ.

    You could check into your state's waivered programs, but if they are anything like ours, follow the same requirements.
