Why wouldn't you want a big lump of coal for christmas?

Can't you make diamonds from Coal? Put a nice big lump of coal in extreme heat and pressure for a long time and you get a diamond, so It's like getting a diamond for Christmas, Self-Assembly required.

So why in cartoons and those Christmas movies where the bad kid gets coal they are so sad? They have the potential of a diamond in front of them!
