Why woun't my firewire and my video camera cooperate?

I keep plugging my firewire into my video camera (Sony handycam DCR-HC52/HC54) because I want to edit my videos and put some on youtube. But whenever I plug my firewire into my computer nothing happens. Do I have to press a special button on my desktop, or on my camera. Or do I have a faulty wire. Please help. This is driving me insane!

Are you using the software that came with the camera?? What operating system is on your PC?? Have you consulted the Sony support site for your camcorder?? Is your camcorder recognized on another PC?? Are you using firewire or USB? I know you said firewire, but there has been some confusion - USB and firewire are not the same. There is no firewire cable in the box, it needs to be purchased separately.

Your computer needs a firewire port. Many Windows computers do not have one - but on can generally be added inexpensively.
