  1. Actually this is right but it's also wrong.

The US Govt. desperately wanted Americans to believe that the 9/11 hijackers hated us because of our love of democracy, our generosity, our peacefullness--in other words, they hated us for our VIRTUES.  And that certainly is not the case.  But it does make the attack easier to talk about.  The media also picked up on this--because it makes it easier to talk about, it doesn't draw angry letters and phone calls, and it comforts us, it makes us feel good about ourselves.

The real motivations were partly our support for Israel--but here again you can spin it.  People who are against Israel want you to believe it was ALL about Israel.  And that's not it, Israel is only a part, though it is symbolic, emblematic of the problem.

The problem is US intervention all over the Middle East.  19 of 20 of the hijackers were from Saudi Arabia, a country where a the US props up a hereditary despotic dictatorship opposed by 95% of the people.  The remaining hijacker was from Pakistan, where a fledgling democracy was destroyed by a military junta, again supported by the US.

Osama Bin Laden issued tapes right after 9/11 that came right out with the motivations.  One had to do with the maintenance of permanent American bases in Saudi Arabia, the land of Mecca and Medina.  Reagan built these 'secret' bases.  GW Bush dismantled them within a few months of 9/11.
