Why you/we call Merry Christmas instead of Happy Christmas?

  1. It just  sounds better. It is more smooth and phonetic sound flows better. It may have something to do with the pronunciation of merry being similar to Mary but that may be a little far fetched.


  2. Traditionally the phrase is "Merry Christmas". In the USA people also say "Happy Holidays".

  3. I always wish everybody a Happy Christmas.

    In Australia commercial businesses send cards with compliments of the season - not allowed to mention Christmas as it's discriminating for those whose religion does not have Christmas and I say this is wrong!!

  4. Working in retail has taught me to say Happy holidays or if a customer says it I will too Merry Christmas.
