Question:

Whydo you get cramps when you run?

Someone told me you get cramps if you drink a lot of water before you run. I went running yesterday and I had some ice tea ,which I probably shouldn't have, before I went running. Could that have caused me to have cramps?

  1. When your body uses energy in it's cells without oxygen, because there's a lack of it - you're excercising, you use a lot!, it creates lactic acid which causes cramps.

Rubbing the muscle disperses the acid and taking a breather allows you to get enough oxygen to your cells.

I don't know of any reason why drinking a lot of water would cause cramps, maybe people just associate excercise with drinking lots of water and think this is the cause of cramps. Maybe, there is a real reason, but I've never heard it.

  2. it depends.  i have heard its when you are not drinking enough water or when you dont have enough oxygen in you.

  3. Well if someone told you that then yes probably. However, i personally almost never get cramps unless i have my period. idk but for some reason i just VERY BAD BAD menstrual cramps...even more when i run. Just make sure u dont drink any water, and when u have menstrual cramps, take 2 advils

  4. i sometimes get cramps but not all the time. i use to get cramps when i drank alot of water and then started running and also when i got my period. but i got use to it now.

  5. yes it couldve.i drak water the other day before running and i got cramps.you also get cramps from not being in shape

  6. Cramp is when your muscles don't get enough oxygen.

I don't know if water has anything to do with it.....if you drink lots of fluid before you excersise it can give you a bit of a belly ache sometimes. Well that's what I find anyway.

Before you do your run do a warmup. It can be as little as 5mins just as long as you're warm inside. This gets your ody ready. If you just run without the warmup that's when you usualy get cramps. Just do some simple stretches and things like star jumps, skipping maybe? And you'll be good to go ;)

It can also be to do with being unfit. When I started running I got cramp all the time. In my legs, sides, arms, you name it!

    Hope this helps
