92 prelude. my thermostat is digital.

i just got this car yesterday, it was driving fine. So i decided to cruise around the block, untill the thermostat was going up to the last bar... red... so i drove back home and open the hood and the coolant or the water tank starts to shoot out compressed air. i called my moms bf who was an experienced machinist. he said let it cool down and then poor coolant and water in the tank and radiator. so i did, i start up the car and it was working good then i drove to work fine. on the way home from work it starts to heat up again, i pulled over and checked it, the water tank was empty of water... i added more water and drove home fine when i reached to the front gate of my apartment it started to heat up again. i checked it and it was max level but i dont get why its heating up when theres enough coolant and water in there???? plz tell me whats up with this car?!!

  1. The thermostat might be stuck, Its a cheap little part. Its located in the upper radiator hose, were the hose connects to the engine block.

    Probably under the water neck.

  2. It could be one of 6 things.

    1. Stuck thermostat, just follow your upper radiator hose to the engine to find it. It'll look like an upside down cup with 2-4 bolts holding it to the intake.

    2. Water pump is shot, to check this.. open your radiator cap, fill it to the top and start the engine with the rad cap OFF with engine COLD, rev it a few times.. you should see the water rise and lower if its good.

    3. Radiator itself is clogged, you can try flushing it but most likely will need replaced if clogged, take it to a radiator shop to check it cheaply.

    4. Head crack/leak/warp, check your oil, is it milkshake colored? are you blowing white smoke out the tail pipe? if so... you got screwed on the car and major engine work is needed.

    5. Could simply be a leak in a radiator hose somewhere, take a good look for wet spots

    6. Fan not operating

  3. Observe if your fans are coming on properly.Sounds to be a bad cooling temp sensor,or relay,or fan motor.

  4. You might have a leak in your water tank or coolant is leaking. Or maybe the fan in the engine is not working or works for a little bit then stops. Or maybe the thermostat stuck closed. Check upper and lower and lower radiator hoses for even temp. if upper one is cold and lower one is hot that means your thermostat is not open and the fan will not kick on that means you have no circulation in the cooling system and you have to bleed your cooling system by opening the 10 mm bleeder on the top of the thermostat housing until air comes out and you will start to see a coolant coming out from the bleeder so it means you have no more air in the system because cooling fan doesn't operate on steam it has to be even temp. circulating in the cooling system.

  5. make sure theres no leaves and sh*it stuck behind the radiator, if theres not then ide go with stuck thermostat, im sure your mums bf can explain that to you and fix it (very cheap) it could possibly be cracked or leaking radiator but unlikly if the fluid levels are still up,Just dont drive it when its to hot, its better to pull over for 5 minutes than cook your motor
