Wi-Fi on the airplane? Macbook?

Can I access a network on the airplane without having any additional equipment but my macbook?

I'm not too tech savvy so I THINK I know what I'm talking about. But when I asked someone at the Apple store they said I wouldn't have a problem using an internet because of my system's built-in AirPort.

I have the newest black macbook, with leopard.

We are taking a 5 1/2 hour flight to Hawaii from LAX.

Thank you for all your help and have a beautiful day!

  1. Most of the planes dont have wi-fi right now so you probably wouldnt get any internet on your flight (you still wouldnt get it if you bought extra equipment)

Your flight probably doesnt have wifi, so you would have to turn off the wi-fi on your macbook if you want to use it on the plane. You cant use any electronics during take off and landing and you cant use your cell phone during your flight. It must be off when your on the plane.

  2. Only 3 planes (not airlines, actual planes) offer in-flight Wi-Fi in the US now.  So while your laptop is capable, there will not be anything to connect to.

American Airlines is adding some 15 planes with wi-fi but they will be primarily flying coast to coast.

Note that unless your plane offers it, you MUST turn off wi-fi while in flight.

  3. There won't be any wifi on your flight. So, no. And no matter how much additional equipment you bought, it would still be no.

  4. You wouldn't be able to recieve wi-fi on the airplane.

They wont even let you turn on the camputer until the plane is already lifted up in the air.

you can use your laptop in the airport terminal but not while you are in the air.
