  1. I would recommend you ask this question in the Religion in Spirituality category, as there are many Wiccans there who I'm sure would be willing to answer your question. They like to clarify answers to these types of questions to dispel misconceptions about the religion.

From my understanding, a Wiccan or witch may keep a book of shadows as a journal of their spells, rituals, etc. Basically, I believe it is a notebook used to record spiritual experiences. Check out the websites below for more information (better than I can explain).

  2. Every Wiccan has a Book of Shadows. There isn't anything specific that is supposed to be in it. It's all the spells, rituals, and any thing else he or she wants to write in it.

  3. A Book of Shadows is a personal journal and collection of learnings, memories, rituals, etc kept by a Wiccan. Most modern Wiccans use a three-ring binder to make it easy to arrange documents and add in other papers. This can, of course, be hand-written or printed from a computer.

It can include but not limited to:

    The Wiccan Rede

    Information on the Sabbats

    Calendar of important days

    Magickal Correspondences

    Rituals and Spells

    Chants and Poems

    Daily Journal/ Dream Journal

  4. Merry Meet Albert,

    As per your question “what is in the book of shadows”? Each book of Shadows is unique to the actual author, but all Books of Shadows has a similar content. Each should have only facts in it, in example;

Formats of Spells and spell-work, rituals and rites (yes there’s a difference), recipes for mixtures, oils and misc other, grafts and schematics. Of course this is only a few things, there is much more you can put into a BOS.

If you noticed the list didn’t include thoughts, any types of journaling or even poetry. The reason is that these and similar items are filled with emotion, both positive and/or negative depending upon the state of mind and being that the author was in at the time of writing it down.

Now a BOS is going to be in center circle with you during ritual, do you want hyper energy or negative energy from yesterday’s events to influence your rite today? It could especially if you place your BOS on your Altar, open and begin reading. At that time you have opened all those emotion and spread them all over your clean and purified sacred space. But again, its really personal choice!

The SCWF teaches new neophytes to keep a BOS and a Journal separate that way everything that enters center circle is focused and pure in intent. I hope that my little blurp has helped out.

    Always in Light and Love

  5. You said "I know who wrote it and when."

Since you're the author, and you know it, it's not my job to guess the contents of yours.
