  1. Both are bad. One friend got burned with hydrochloric acid this semester. (HCl)

She was wearing gloves and the liquid burned her wrist. She spent 35 minutes with her wrist under running cold water.

The second it wasn't bathed in water it burned like h**l.The skin came off a week or so later.

I would suspect alkiline liquid is just as bad depending on concentration.

  2. Anything not pH of 7.0 is bad.  The further away from neutral, the worse it is.  I have been  burned by HCl, H2SO4, NaOH and they all hurt.

  3. That depends upon what the acidic liquid is and what the alkaline liquid is.

For example vinegar is an acidic liquid and Drano is an alkaline liquid. Vinegar is pretty harmless, but Drano will eat your skin (hate it when that happens).

On the other hand consider black tea, which is an alkaline liquid and hydrofluoric acid which is an acidic liquid. You can drink black tea and it is pretty yummy, but hydrofluoric acid will eat through your skin and dissolve your bones (nasty stuff).

There is no way to determine which is worse, acid or alkaline, both can be very bad and both can be harmless depending upon the specific substance.
