Wicketkeeper needs to be a good batsman in modern cricket, says http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Syed-Saba-Karim-c92363 – Cricket News Update
Former Indian wicket-keeper batsman, Saba Karim, has said a stumper should be a good batsman as well in order to make a successful career in the modern-day cricket.
He argued that since the International sport has become so much competitive these days, every wicket-keeper necessarily needs to be a proficient batsman if he wants to register his name among
the best in the business.
"Now you need to be an accomplished wicketkeeper and a very good batsman too to survive at the highest level. If you are only a stand-alone wicketkeeper it will not help you to get into any
international side," Karim told PTI.
Despite having massive batting talent, Karim failed to shine with the bat during his international stint. In a single Test for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, his batting average is just 15.00 while his average with
the bat in 34 One-dayers is 15.73.
It is not wrong to say that such a low average at the highest level of the game doesn't justify Karim’s batting potential, as he has 7310 runs to his credit in 120 first-class matches with
an average of 56.66.
When asked about the basics of becoming a booming wicket-keeper batsman in present-day cricket, Karim referred to the greats like Adam Gilchrist and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MV-Boucher-c2048 who have proved their mettle
with both bat and gloves.
Gilchrist, Boucher and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KC-Sangakkara-c1779 are currently sitting at the top three positions in the list of most successful wicket-keepers in the 50-over format of the game with 472, 421 and 372
dismissals respectively.
Moreover, the trio has equally good records with the bat in every form of the game, as without any doubt Gilchrist and Sangakkara’s batting potential can be compared to the some of the best
batsmen ever.
"Look at http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Gilchrist-c918, look at Mark Boucher. These players were able to survive in international cricket for a number of years because of their skills both in the front as well as behind
the wickets. We need wicketkeepers who can contribute with the bat as well," added the 43-year-old former cricketer who has 30 dismissals to his credit in the 50-over format of the sport.
