Wide receiver Reggie Wayne wins three-year $17.5 million deal from Indianapolis Colts-NFL News
The Indianapolis Colts confirmed to have handed over a three-year new deal to wide receiver, Reggie Wayne, and the signing has ended the possibility of formation of another duo between him and his long-term colleague, free agent quarterback, Peyton Manning,
for the stipulated period of time, at least.
Since Peyton’s release, a number of media reports linked Wayne to be interested in moving to a team, which Manning is possibly going to sign with in the future.
The main reason was described to be the success of Wayne-Manning duo at Colts, and according to the reports, Wayne was keen on waging the relationship once again.
Not anymore though, as Colts confirmed to have awarded the contract to the wide receiver, guaranteeing his stay with the franchise for three more seasons.
Wayne is expected to make $17.5 million from the deal over the next three years. He will receive the signing bonus of $7.5 million and $13.5 during first two years of the stay.
Following the deal, Colts’ owner, Jim Irsay, tweeted “REGGIE! REGGIE! REGGIE!!!!!!!”, and provided no details regarding the deal.
The player is probably the luckiest Colt, who, amid the team’s massive reshuffling campaign, has received the good news of the contract extension.
Colts had released half a dozen players before the start of the free agency, on Tuesday, March 13, 2012, to prolong their so called rebuilding process, which has seen almost all former managers, coaches and many players becoming history for them.
Wayne had probably sensed all that in the making well before and after the last game of the 2011-12 National Football League (NFL) season, he had commented:
"I said if this is going to be the last game, I want to go out with a bang. It was great. Hopefully, I'll be back but you never know."
After Manning’s release, Wayne’s departure from Colts to join any other team, and most probably to the team, which Manning is likely to sign with, was seen as inevitable.
The player himself had spoken of the desire to pursue Manning to the team he joins in the future.
In any case, the chances of that duo happening were hanging in the balance, as despite Wayne’s desire of playing along with Peyton, the QB did not state anything that could also reflect his interest in playing with Wayne again.
