Wide receiver Santonio Holmes might miss the entire New York Jets’ preseason – NFL News
New York jets have taken another setback as their hopes of playing their premier wide receiver Santonio Holmes in the preseason are fading fast.
Holmes will sit out Jets’ preseason game to be played on Saturday against neighbours New York Giants.
While talking to the media, Head Coach Rex Ryan indicated the possibility that Holmes might miss the rest of the preseason. Ryan said:
“Certainly it’s possible, but don’t think that will be the case. Obviously, you’d like to have your guys out there on the field…. But you got make sure you’re not putting them out there when they could be at further risk or they’re not ready to come back.”
While playing in an inter-squad scrimmage earlier, Holmes injured his rib after getting a hit from teammate Antonio Cromartie. It was previously thought that Holmes had a broken rib.
Yet all those concerns were dusted off after X-ray reports showed that Holmes only had a bruised rib cartilage.
Desperately wanting a quick return, Holmes have been doing workout that includes some conditioning exercises. He has also been practising on the sidelines by catching balls thrown by machine.
Holmes is not the only one in the wide receiving corps who is absent from training camp due to injury. Slot receiver Jeremy Kerley is also out with an aggravated hamstring.
It looks like a dare situation for Coach Ryan who will enter the field on Saturday without his starting receiving corps.
Yet it is the regular season he is most worried about. Ryan hopes that his wide receiver will return on the field 100% fit. Ryan said:
“It’s certainly not ideal. You wish that he could be out there. You wish that we hadn’t gone through the injuries we had with Chaz (Schilens) and with other guys with (Jeremy Kerley)… If you had your preference, you want them out there.”
Receiver Chaz Schilens, who was the most prominent candidate to take the starting receiving post, got an ankle injury during Wednesday’s practice session. Ryan also denied having any setback during the recovery of Holmes' injury.
