Wide receiver Santonio Holmes thinks New York Jets made him a scapegoat for the 2011 season – NFL News
New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes is known for being too vocal and frank while talking to media. This is why Jets have put a restriction on Holmes by limiting his media availability to no more than 10 minutes.
Even with such limitations, Holmes has been able to make headlines.
Talking to ESPN Radio on Monday, July 30, 2012, Holmes made some huge revelations about the 2011 season debacle, particularly in the last week of the season. He said:
"It was playoffs on the line and your best receiver doesn't get but two passes thrown his way in 60 minutes of football. That's just hard to understand when you want everything just as bad as everybody else does and it just doesn't happen. And nobody has
the answers for it ... but the scapegoat is (the) answer. And that's what happened."
Holmes had an in-huddle argument before the start of game against Miami Dolphins in Week 17. After this incident, Holmes was benched for the game.
Holmes has previously been involved in many such arguments in front of public. He previously commented on the team having a two quarterback system.
After those comments, head coach Rex Ryan came out and said that he did not hire Holmes as an offensive coordinator but rather as a wide receiver. Holmes also criticised Jets offensive line twice during last season.
The only positive comments that came out of this interview were the praising new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano got from Holmes.
While appreciating Sparano, Holmes did criticise the former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, saying that there was a lack of coordination between the head coach and Schottenheimer.
Earlier this month, Holmes went to NFL.com’s Around The League. He talked about last season’s finish and said:
"It was one game. That's all it was. One game that we (messed) up and it happened to be the last one of the season. Whatever everybody else took from it, it wasn't good on our behalf.”
