Question:

Wide receiver or Halfback?

I'm joining my freshmen football team at high school but I'm still thinking about playing either wide receiver or halfback. I'm around 5'5"-5'6" and weigh around 135-140 pounds. I'm pretty fast and strong. If you need anymore info, just ask. Also, which one do you think I would be better at? And if not any of these two, what other positions would you recommend?

  1. Either way if fine as long as you have speed. You will need to be quicker for HB though as it requires more speed and your first 3 steps are the most important so you can hit the hole. Many good wide outs do not have great speed but if you can run a route properly and regulate your speed during your pattern to fool the d-back, then this will be your key to success.

  2. WHAT ABOUT SAFETY? U SAY YOU'RE PRETTY FAST AND STRONG. PLAYING DEFENSE WILL ALLOW U TO MEASURE YOUR ABILITIES ON THE FIELD. IF YOU'RE BETTER SUITED FOR EITHER OF THOSE OFFENSIVE POSTIONS THE COACH SHLD TELL U.

  3. I was that size as a sophomore; I was WR and punt returner, but we then implemented the wishbone, and being the fastest guy (yet white) on the team, they put me in the wishbone with two African Americans.  Though I loved those guys and the name they gave us (Oreo cookie backfield), I loved WR because it was easier to get out into open space.  I know they were trying to take advantage of my speed, but having played football only a year, I had no RB savvy.  But at WR, I could do far more things, turn 5 yard catches into 50 yard catches.  Without a great O Line, I never got many chances as an RB, and we only 1 one game.

They were pretty pissed when I switched to baseball!

  4. Halfback :P

  5. i would say halfback because your short, your strong and fast. if you were a wide receiver you'd be easy to cover since your short.

  6. Well I would say running back. I am not sure how much taller the other people are on your team on the other teams you will be facing, but if you think that you are able to burn the defenders on long routes and think you can catch in traffic then go for wide receiver. I think though that if your teams offense is more of a run team then they may need you at running back :). If you know your 40 time that would be good.

  7. You are a freshman in high school.  That means that you are about 14-15, and you are not yet done growing.  Most young men end up having a similar height and weight to that of thier father.  If you intend to play varsity football you have to think ahead to when you are 17 or 18, and what height and weight you expect to be then  Obviously your weight can changed based on how much work you put in in the wight room in the offseson.

All that being said, unless your father is 6'4" and you expect to be the same height (then I would recommend WR) I would chose the position that you have the most desire to play.  When you really love something you will always push yourself harder at it, and as a result you will be better at it.

Also, I don't know what class you high school is, and whether or not players go both ways, but you could always consider playing CB, Safety, or even LB depending on the league you play in.

  8. you are kinda small stick with HB
