Widescreen tv on normal tv screen...?

Hello

Can anyone tell me why the sides are missing from my tv screen when I watch most channels...I have a "Normal" tv with full screen picture.

I have adjusted my tv to show the picture as widescreen but again the sides are still missing, the only difference is the picture has been stretched but the full screen effect is still not happening...WHY ?
