Question:

Widowed 61 year old need health care?

My mother is a CNA which is a very physically and stressfully demanding job. She is almost 62. Because of her pay (and it is not much) she receives less than half of her widow SS benefits. She cut her hours from 40--32/week. She would like to cut more but it will knock her out of her workplace healthcare. If she quits alltogether, she gets all of the SS but over 70% of it would go to pay for healthcare premiums in a private setting.

Does anyone know of any really good really affordable private insurance or can anyone offer me any ideas to forward on to her. We asked SS and they could not offer her any type of insurance or help. She is not asking for free insurance of even a handout.

She and my father worked like dogs all of their lives and there is something about this that does not seem right.

thanks to everyone in advance

  1. Even if she is in perfect health, private health insurance is going to be expensive for a 61 year old.  If she has any medical conditions, it might keep her from being eligible for coverage at all.

Frankly, if it were my family member, I'd advise them to continue working the hours necessary to remain eligible for insurance at work...after they were old enough to qualify for Medicare, they could cut back.

(If she doesn't like working full time as a CNA, she could try to find a different job, of course.)

  2. Even if she doesn't have any pre-existing conditions, at her age, it will be difficult to find inexpensive health insurance as an individual.

Her best bet is to contact a local independant agent/broker and see if they can recommend one that will accept her with her medical history and and age.

  3. No, private companies don't WANT to insure people her age, except with massive deductibles, at massive premiums.  She's at the age where MOST of the expenses get incurred.

She's going to have to hang in there until she's eligible for Medicare.  Or pay through the nose.
