Question:

Wielding an oversized weapon in D&D?

My medium-sized Dwarf fighter is currently wielding a large sized greataxe as a two-handed weapon, and I know that the axe causes him to incur an attack roll penalty.

What I don't know is how much that penalty is. The more veteran players at the club I play at tell me it's -4, but the online SRD document says it's -2 per mismatched category, so I'd really appreciate some clarification on this subject.

Also, just in case, could someone also point out the page in the player's handbook that states this, if any? Thanks in advance.

  1. in the 3rd edition it is -4

but in the 3.5 edition, then it is -2

it depends on how you play.

  2. Using the waraxe one handed would incur a -4 penalty (-2 for the size increase, -2 for the category change to a two-handed weapon).  Two handed, just a -2 penalty.  I just answered a similar question to this one, but the waraxe was huge size (which the dwarf could only use if he was epic level and had the appropriate feat).  The info can be found on page 113 of the Players Handbook.
