Wife of Johnny Tapia, Teresa Tapia releases statement – Boxing News
On the demise of her husband Johnny Tapia, Teresa Tapia has released a statement, acknowledging the support and condolences of Johnny’s fans. The statement further recognizes Johnny as a Hall of Fame boxer.
The statement reads, “Today our family grieves the loss of a husband, a father and a close friend. With Johnny, the world has lost not just a Hall of Fame boxer but a special person, a fighter in life and in the ring. I am appreciative of all the support
and condolences we’ve received and I thank Johnny’s many friends and fans for standing by in this difficult time.”
Johnny was found dead at his residence in Albuquerque on Sunday, as confirmed by the police. The five-time world champion was suffering from cocaine addiction, alcoholism and depression. However, the cause of death has not been discovered yet, even though
spokesman Robert Gibbs said the death did not seem to suspicious.
The statement further reads, “I know many people are waiting for news but as we await the results of the autopsy I am not in a position to make any comment on what happened on Sunday.”
Moreover, Teresa promises that a memorial service will be held shortly for Johnny so that everyone can wish him goodbye. However, the statement says, that the autopsy and the holiday is delaying the plans.
Lastly, the statement reads that Johnny was a special fighter and person and he will be missed by everyone. It further reads that Johnny used to love people a lot and he was great at making friends.
Tapia was a great fighter, however his career was found in jeopardy several times due to his cocaine addiction. During his short career, Johnny has acquired the IBF and WBO bantamweight titles, the IBF featherweight title and the WBA bantamweight title.
Johnny was popularly known as the consummate underdog by his fans. At several instances, Tapia found himself in conflict with the law, due to which he went to jail several times.
News of his demise has come as a shock to the boxing fraternity and his fans. He was a great achiever who plunged into the darkness of depression after he retired.
