  1. Not unless the Wifi hotspot charges you to connect.  Wifi is usually free (i.e. mcdonalds, starbucks, etc.).  AT&T only gets involved when you use the 3G/Edge network.  If you can connect without needing a passkey, then enjoy free wifi!

  2. It is easy: some WIFI access points are open (i.e. you can connect to them without a password) others are secured and you need to have a password to access them.

With the secured ones the situation is quite clear, since you have to ask somebody (a company) for the password they will also tell you how much you have to pay for it (if anything).

With the open ones: connecting to them is easy and one connected you will see two behaviours:

    - your internet just works and it is free

    - whatever address you type on the phone's browser you will be redirected to a service page first where you have to login (or pay for a time limited access token) which means that the network is open but not free.

You may want to check projects such as http://www.fon.com, one way we all can contribute to making sure that wherever we are free wlan is available.

  3. Nope, no charge. i just got an iPhone the other day and I use the wifi at work, my house, and at the bar, but using wifi at the bar isn't a great idea, you tend to leave a lot of writings on people facebook walls and dont remember, then the next day you wonder what the funny looks from people at work are all about.

Wifi also tends to be a lot better on the battery then the g3 data connection, which can drain the battery very very quickly and is a lot slower.

  4. yes to me is free. at the airports. at the bookstores. so many places.

  5. Wifi is free depending where you are. Some places do charge (some Starbucks) but other than that, it is free. The data plan is only used when you are using the 3g network (actual cell phone network). If you have an iphone, you are required to add the iphone data plan onto your account which is unlimited data (an extra $30/mo). The data plan does not include texting though, unlimited texting is $20/mo. If you are going to use AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) on your iphone, then I would reccommend the unlimited texting plan.
