my cell phone service provider is at&t. i currently have a blackberry, and i was having problems with the internet turning on and charging me for it, so the people at the store turned the internet function off completely. now my blacberry keys dont work, so i am considering getting an at&t tilt (refurbished). i read that it has wifi. if i am at a starbucks or something and i go on the internet, will at&t charge me for it, or is the internet free wherever wifi connection is free? i didnt explain this very well but whoever knows the answer please explain it to me because i am very bad at "tech stuff" haha. thanks.

  1. AT&T Wifi at Starsbucks via hourly, daily, or monthly. Or via monthly charge membership.

When you log on (on your phone) to use the internet Wifi at Starbuck, you will be prompt to input log-in account number to access. If you don't have log-in account number, you can sign up right there. It will ask whether you want to open an account or pay by hourly, etc. It will ask you for credit/debit card info before you can access the internet.

You don't get free Wifi (in the future, iPhone owners might be able to get it for free).

EDIT: The person below is wrong! (Only some places offer free Wifi, NOT at Starsbuck's At&t Wifi. NOTE: You can only browse for free on At&t websites and links only, while on Wifi at Starbucks.)

  2. There seems to be some confusion about this subject.  Let me set the record straight here...

Dominic is correct.  If the WiFi service you are trying to use is free, it will not ask you for any log-in information and you can use the service free of charge from the company providing it and AT&T.  AT&T and Starbucks may have a deal worked out together where AT&T provides the WiFi service at their stores, but you have to subscribe to it for a day or whatever, but not all places do that.

So, to put it simply, if the WiFi service is free at the location your using it, there will be NO extra charges from AT&T.  They wouldn't have any idea you're using WiFi at a free hotspot anyway.

  3. There is no charge from A T&T to use Wi-Fi if your cell phone has Wi-Fi.  Your phone will connect to any Wi-Fi hotspots areas that offer wireless internet such as coffee shops, restaurants, hotels, airports.  However some of these locations will offer free wireless internet and others will charge you by the hour or day usage.

You can use Wi-Fi in your house so that you can get wireless internet to your cell phone using Wi-Fi.  You will need a computer, dsl or cable internet and a router.  There is no fees from your in home Wi-Fi to your cell phone.
