Wigan Athletic lose James McCarthy until January
English Premier League side Wigan Athletic have suffered a major blow with the news that midfielder James McCarthy will be out of action until January.
The 19-year-old underwent surgery on the ankle which was injured in the 1-1 EPL draw with Bolton Wanderers on 23 October.
The Republic of Ireland international suffered the problem as a result of a tackle by Fabrice Muamba.
Wigan boss Roberto Martinez told reporters that: "He is going to come back stronger and, physically, probably in a better situation than before. The most important thing is to see him back on the pitch with no problem."
McCarthy has become an important player for the club since his £1.2m switch from Scottish Premier League side Hamilton Academical in the summer of 2009.
He has made 35 appearances across all competitions for the club and has scored one goal in the EPL.
Martinez added that: "He has been sensational, sometimes it is hard to understand the age of James.
'McCarthy plays with great maturity'
"He plays with a great maturity and understanding and the level of performance has been so consistent for a young man it shows you the quality he has got.
"When he comes back he will be stronger and ready to make a real impact in the rest of the season."
McCarthy came to prominence with Hamilton, with whom he starred alongside fellow Wigan player James McArthur. He helped them gain promotion to the SPL in the 2007-08 season and made over 100 appearances for the club in total.
Meanwhile, defender Emmerson Boyce is slowly working his way back to full fitness.
The 31-year-old Barbados cap has been out of action due to a pulled hamstring, but he is recovering from the injury and should be ready to play within ten days.
