Wigan Athletic manager, Roberto http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Martinez-c24468, is targeting a wide player to increase the depth and quality of his squad for the upcoming 2011/12 Barclays Premier League season.
The Latics survived relegation from the Premier League on the very last day of the 2010/11 term, and Martinez is now aiming to build a stronger squad in order to keep the Latics in the Barclays Premier League for the foreseeable future.
Wigan Athletic have already signed the highly-rated Omani goalkeeper, Ali Al-Habsi, from Bolton Wanderers for £4 million and is looking to bring a couple of new players to DW Stadium.
Martinez signed http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Tom-Cleverley-c35218 on loan from Manchester United last season. The English footballer was a revelation at DW Stadium and played a huge role in the Latics’ Premier League survival campaign. However, Cleverley returned to Manchester United and has
no intentions of returning. The Wigan boss confirmed that the club is in hunt of a wide player.
He said, “Tom Cleverley has gone back to Manchester United, which leaves another space in the squad, and replacing him will be our next task.”
Wigan Athletic are being heavily linked with Manchester City’s want-away winger, Shaun Wright Phillips, and the club chairman David Whelan also confirmed the Latics’ interest in the English winger.
Moreover, the Latics are also reportedly monitoring Liverpool’s out of favour winger, Milan Jovanovic, who is on the verge of leaving Anfield in order to find first team action.
However, Martinez has refused to reveal the names of his transfer targets and said, “It would be a big, big mistake to start talking about all the players who we would http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Love-c22466 to have in the squad here or the ones we wouldn't like to have.”
The Latics manager revealed that the club will offer new deals to few of the current players and has confirmed that the new arrivals are expected this summer.
“There are a couple of players we are trying to re-sign to new deals, while there are going to be some new signings coming in to the squad,” added Martinez.
