Wigan Athletic manager blames transfer window for poor start
Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez today revealed he is looking forward to the transfer window closing next Tuesday so his players can focus and not be distracted by speculation linking them to other clubs.
Martinez has seen the Latics fall to heavy defeats in their first two games of the English Premier League season — a 4-0 defeat at home at the hands of Blackpool and a 6-0 thumping by Chelsea, also at the DW Stadium.
However, Wigan have notched up their first win of the campaign after overcoming Hartlepool 3-0 in the League Cup. Charles N’Zogbia made a cameo appearance when he came on as a substitute with just 10 minutes of the game remaining. Rumours have suggested it may have been his last game for the club, with Birmingham City today confirming they have submitted an improved offer for the 24-year-old winger after having an eight million pound bid rejected earlier this summer.
When asked whether the France international would be joining Wigan’s EPL rivals, Martinez said that: "Nobody knows - it's the nature of the transfer window. I think it's ridiculous to be in the start of the campaign playing competitive games and the window isn't even closed. At the moment we have a couple of players who are a little bit up in the air. They don't know where their future lies and that is going to affect you but that is the nature of the game."
After notching up a much-needed victory, Martinez spoke of his belief that his side are steadily coming together.
He added that: "I am very pleased with many aspects. We showed energy and performance and we are starting to do things we were working on in the summer. In the Premier League we've been doing good things but at the wrong time. We did it at the right time and we are slowly gelling together."
