Wigan Warriors’ Stuart Fielden ruled out of remaining matches of 2011 Super League – Rugby News
English Rugby League Club, Wigan Warriors, have suffered a major blow as their star prop, Stuart Fielden, has been ruled out of the rest of the season due to injury. Earlier, Fielden made a return to the game during his side’s 44 – 24 victory over the Warrington Wolves last weekend during the 2011 Carnegie Challenge Cup quarter-final.
Officials at the club have confirmed the news in a statement released on their website on Wednesday, July 27. According to reports, Fielden injured his pectoral muscle during the team’s training session.
Wigan Warriors head coach, Michael Maguire, has expressed his displeasure on the loss of their experienced prop. He said, “There is some unfortunate news on Stuart, he was 100% and was ready for a return this weekend if the opportunity arised but in the gym he has strained his pectoral which is probably going to rule him out for the rest of the season.”
Earlier, Fielden returned to the field after an absence of four months due to injury to his knee.
The injury will not allow Fielden to help the Warriors in their pursuit of a double title in the season. Warriors are currently top ranked in the 2011 Engage Super League and have also confirmed their spot in the semi-finals of the 2011 Challenge cup after defeating the defending champions in the quarter-final.
Maguire added, “He will be missed. He's been a big part of this club and we remember what he did for us last year.”
Maguire termed the omission of Fielden from the squad as a great loss for the team. He added that the injury is disappointing even for Fielden who has worked extremely hard to regain his fitness.
Maguire has praised Fielden’s approach and commitment and expressed his hope that, “he will come back bigger and stronger.”
Additionally, Warriors will be without the services of their forward Paul Prescott, who sustained a hamstring injury against the Wolves. Meanwhile, Chris Tuson and Amos Roberts are still to recover from their respective knee injuries.
However, in a positive development, Warriors anticipate a return of their injured winger, Darrell Goulding, after recovering from his ankle injury.
