Wigan Warriors keep Super League dream alive by clinching massive victory against Catalan Dragons
Wigan Warriors have won a massive 44-0 victory over the Catalan Dragons, on Sunday, September 25, 2011 in the Super League semi-final showdown at the DW Stadium.
Warriors’ game at the DW Stadium was studded with seven unanswered tries and Pat Richards stole the limelight by kicking eight goals out of a total nine attempts initiated by him. With this outstanding performance of his, Richards has clinched 2,000 points
for his franchise, which makes him the fourth person from Warriors to have reached it the landmark.
Other Wigan players whose scoring at the final eliminator cannot be sidelined are, George Carmont, Josh Charnley, Harrison Hansen, Brett Finch, Ryan Hoffman, Sam Tomkins and Liam Farrell.
Only five minutes away from the wrap-up of the match, Hansen, who was appearing for his 200th game, scored a try to further stretch Wigans’ leads.
Michael Maguire’s pack was brilliant through the length of the game with the score-break up of 18-0 at half-time of the clash. The French resistance against Maguire’s Warriors fell apart only after 24 minutes of defence and wound up in an embarrassing defeat
against Wigans.
Maguire, who was coaching the final home-match for Wigans, was expecting a lot more from his squad despite their non-rebutted commendable performance against Dragons. He was of the opinion that his pack could do better than what they displayed in the Sunday’s
showdown.
Dragons had lost their grip over the game after the first-half of the game, which meant that they were in-line for the fourth one sided contest of its kind, out of a total six matches played by them this season.
While speaking about his outfit’s brilliant performance, Wigan’s coach said, “We sat down this week and looked at the areas of the game we needed to improve on. And talking to them now in the dressing room, they have said there are areas where they still
need to kick on and go again. We have to get the basics right against St Helens next week and continue to play how we did out there for 80 minutes. It's about hunger and doing it for 80 minutes.”
It is apparent from Maguire’s statement that there are still some areas which have been pointed out by the squad members, which if dealt with will help Wigans become invincible against all odds.
Warriors will battle St. Helens at the Stobart Stadium to contest for the Super League Grand Final berth whereas the league toppers, Warrington Wolves have picked Rhinos Leeds in their competition for their next Super League clash lined-up on Friday.
Wolves have earned the luxury of choosing their opponents for the Friday’s semi-final showdown at the Halliwell Jones Stadium after finishing grabbing a win in the inaugural play-off of Super League.
