Wigan Warriors sign partnership deal with Wales to develop Rugby League
Wigan Warriors have entered into a partnership agreement with the Welsh governing body on Thursday November 17, to help the development of Rugby League in Wales. The deal has also includes assistance to Welsh second tier Championship 1 franchise, South Wales
Scorpions.
The contract is also going to benefit both sides in terms of team and player development.
Wigan chairman, Ian Lenagan, said that he is proud of his association with the Welsh side and will take the partnership opportunity to build on the Welsh players’ development for the future.
Expressing his thoughts about their recently developed association, Warriors’ chairman added, "We want to help grow the sport of rugby league in Wales and ultimately to help them become more competitive on the international stage in time for the World Cup
by offering advice and support and applying our expertise to the development of young rugby players in Wales.”
As part of the deal, ex-Wigan development coach, Dave Clark, has been installed as the head coach at Scorpions. It is highly expected that the Welsh players are going to benefit immensely from the arrangement.
While talking about the deal penned between Wigan and Wales, Scorpions chairman Phil Davies added, "With this link, we will be able to mutually assist each other in regards to player and team development which will be very beneficial to both parties"
It was added further that money can not buy assistance, which they have gained through this partnership with Wigans, especially from the dual registration clause.
In the wake of the deal, Wigans have taken in three Welsh recruit for Warriors, which includes Rhodri Lloyd, Gil Dudson and Ben Flower. All three were previously playing for Crusaders during the squads final season. The ex-Crusaders will join in with their
former Crusaders coach, Iestyn Harris, at Wigan, who recently took up the assistant coach’s position.
Similar deals have also been struck with other squads as Wigan and Saracens announced on November 7, a partnership to share players and resources. It was also announced that both sides will face each other in cross-code encounters too.
