Wigan Athletic manager, Roberto Martinez, is confident that his side have what it takes to ensure that they can avoid relegation in the Barclays Premier League.
Wigan Athletic are dangerously close to playing Championship football next season and although that may sound great for those who are not familiar with the tiers of English football, it is something that every team in the Barclays Premier League hopes to
avoid.
A point above the drop zone and having played a game more than Bolton Wanderers, who currently sit in 18th place, Wigan could end up in 19th place by the end of next week if Bolton and Blackburn http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rovers-c40385 both win their respective matches
and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roberto-c31294 Martinez’s men lose theirs.
However, the Latics boss, is adamant that the club have the mental ability to deal with the pressure and any last-day drama, but acknowledges that they do not have enough points to ensure their survival as yet.
He said, “It’s impossible to know how many points we will need because our last two games are against Blackburn and Wolves, but we know that we haven’t got enough yet.”
Martinez also explained that he would be too concerned if their fight for survival in the league went down to the last day of the season.
“I’m not desperate to avoid the last-day drama again – we understand we are still in the middle of a scrap, and if we have to go to the last day, so be it. As a club, we are prepared mentally that every single point is going to count and it could easily
go down to the wire.”
Wigan face Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers and Wolverhampton Wanderers in their final three matches of the season and a win against Blackburn and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Martinez-c24468’s men stay in the league for another season
at least.
Based on their recent form, survival seems a near certainty as the club have won four of their last five matches including wins against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429.
The Wigan manager ended his interview with the Daily Mirror on a lighter note when he said, “I’m 38 years old and I feel like a 50-year-old, but it’s a good way to test your heart.”
