Wigan warriors beat Huddersfield giants 30-38
Par Richards continued to dominate the Super League a he continued his scoring spree helping Wigan get four points clear at the top. David Hodgson scored a hat trick for Huddersfield, to match Wigan’s haul of six tries.
The difference between the two sides was the boot of Richards; the big Aussie nailed five of his six conversions and kicked in 2 penalties. George Carmont and Any Coley were on target for Wigan, as well as Joel Tomkins and Darrel Goulding who scored twice for Wigan.
With all the events on the weekend going their way, Wigan have stormed 4 points clear at the top, as apart from their win, Warrington’s lost at Leeds, and Saint Helens could failed to register a win at Salford. Hogson’s hat trick, which was his fourth of the season, was all he needed to surpass the leagues top scorer Richards.
And even though it was big improvement from the performance they put up against Warrington, it was still not enough for Huddersfield to prevent a 3rd straight defeat. The win for Wigan also marked a double over the Giants, wi was followed by Warrior’s 28-10 win at Murray field 2 weeks ago.
The match was preceded by the controversial comments made by the bold Giants coach Nathan Brown, who reacted aggressively to a late tackle by Wigan Skipper Sean O’Loughlin on Luke Robinson, hinting that players from his team, if not protected by officials might have to take law into their own hands.
The tempers in the match were threatening to go over board throughout, an o’Loughlin was strategically withdrawn from the game at one point, and though the only charges on Wigan players were for Technical offences rather then illegal physical ones.
Pp Coley got yellow carded fro a foul on the 52nd minute mark, while Tomkins had to pay the price for s series of plat the ball infringements. The giants made full use each time scoring against the Wigan side with only 12 men. Keith Mason and one other player were on the report by the referee Brown, for lat tackles on Wigan player Thomas Leuluai in the first half.
Huddersfield could not have imagined a worse start, as the Kick off from Danny Brough went dead, and Tomkins obliged by scoring firs making full use of the mistake. But the Giants struck back by some inspirational play from Brett Hodgson to take a lead of 20-12.
Leroy and David were aided well, on the wing by the full back
As he cut out passes from the centre, for tries before he joined forces with Brough and Paul to score in a silky move.
The Giants had thoroughly deserved the lead. But a lapse in concentration in a 12-minute period during the game led to their downfall, either side of the break. As winger Goulding got his 13th try of the season, while Tomkins touched down for his second minutes before the restart.
And Wigan was in the lead, when Richards and Marsh combined to send Goulding free for his second try. Which pretty much handed the match to Wigan, and a place on top of the table.
