Wiggolly Dantas and Filipe Toledo qualify for Round 5 at Quiksilver Saquarema Prime – Surfing News
Brazil’s Wiggolly Dantas and his fellow countryperson Filipe Toledo advanced to the fifth round (Round of 16) at the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola after putting on an impressive performance to win their respective Round 4 (Round of 24)
heats that went down at the point-break of Itauna Beach in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Thursday, May 24.
Dantas got the better of his compatriot Yan Guimarares in the seventh heat, bringing the competition to an end for the latter.
The eighth heat saw Brazil’s Leonardo Neves succumb to his compatriot Toledo, getting removed from the contention for the event title while sending his rival into the next round in the process.
The top surfing talent from around the world continued to compete in the man-on-man battles during the fourth round of the latest Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME event, determined to get their hands on the coveted prize money and up to 850
ASP ranking points. The two-to-three foot waves on offer during the afternoon session on Thursday gave the surfers plenty of opportunity to loosen up and put on confident and thrilling performances.
The seventh heat of Round 4 saw Dantas and Guimarares go head-to-head for a place in the fifth round. After failing to deliver during their previous heat, both the surfers could not settle for anything less than a win.
As the heat got underway, Dantas got down to business right away, locking a solid wave in the opening minutes to unload a string of impressive manoeuvres and thus posting a 7.67 on the score-board. Going through a series of ordinary scores, the Brazilian
surfer managed to add an additional 5.23 points to his account, thus reaching a two-wave total of 12.90 points.
Guimarares was unable to threaten his rival’s score after only managing to score a 5.10 and 6.33 off his best-two waves, thus finishing 1.47 points short of the required score.
The eighth heat pitted Toledo and Neves in a man-on-man battle for the Round 5 spot. Both the surfers had been in an impressive form during the early stages of the competition, though a stumble in Round 3 got them standing on the edge facing a do-or-die
situation.
As the battle got underway, both the surfers got off to a slow start. Neves eventually broke free of the shackles by collecting a 7.00 off his first business-wave and went on to add a 4.70 to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 11.70 points.
Toledo stepped up in the final minutes of the heat, collecting a couple of scores in the eight-point range to finish with a heat-total of 16.43 points. The last-minute effort served to earn him the win, thus taking him through into the next round.
