Wiggolly Dantas and Granger Larsen triumph: Second round of Super Surf International – Part 3
Done with the first four heats, Super Surf International’s round of 24 now headed towards the fifth heat.
The fifth heat pitted Brazilian’s Wiggolly Dantas against his two countrymen, Ricardo Santos and Flavio Nakagima, along with America’s Nathan Yeomans.
Due to the strong offshore winds, the surfers had a difficult time catching and surfing waves. Rather than going for technical tricks, they were forced to settle for something relatively simpler.
Under the demanding conditions, Dantas managed to outshine his rivals by getting a couple of good scores. He locked his first wave early in the heat to earn 6.33 points and caught another wave in the last moments to add 5.67 to his score to finish with a heat-total of 12.00.
His compatriot, Santos, put up a commendable fight and nearly succeeded in depriving Dantas of victory, but eventually failed to go all the way. Opening his account with a 7.33 off the very first wave that he caught, Santos only required 4.67 off his second wave. Unfortunately for him, he only managed to get 4.07 and ended 0.60 points short of victory. Even though he finished in second place, he still remains alive in the competition and will be competing in the next round.
Nakagima and Yeomans rounded out the bottom two positions after scoring 9.70 and 0.93 points respectively. Yeomans completely succumbed to the tough conditions and only managed to catch one wave for the 0.93 score. Both the surfers have been eliminated from the event.
In the sixth heat, Hawaii’s Granger Larsen took on America’s Gabe Kling, Brazil’s Paulo Moura and Australia’s Lincoln Taylor.
All four athletes have been impressive in the first round, but it was only Larsen who was able to carry his excellent form to the round of 24. He scored an amazing 7.87 off his first heat in and 7.40 off his second to jump to 15.27 points. The impressive score eventually carried him off to a convincing victory, consequently securing a place for him in the round of 24.
Kling struggled to catch waves throughout the heat. He did manage a 3.93 and 8.00 of the couple that he eventually caught and found himself grabbing the second position with a score of 11.93 points. His place in the round of 24 also got confirmed after the runner-up position.
The local surfer, Moura, disappointed the crowd by finishing in third place, scoring 8.80 off his wave waves, while Taylor finished at the bottom with a heat-total of 6.24 points. Both of them have been eliminated from the competition.
