Wiggolly Dantas claims top honours in Round 2 of Quiksilver Saquarema Prime – Surfing News
Wiggolly Dantas from Brazil made his way into the third round (No-Loser Round of 24) of the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola after getting the better of his three rivals in the 10th heat of Round 2 (Round of 48) that took place
at the primary event site of Itauna Beach in Saquarema, Brazil, on Wednesday, May 23.
Brazil’s Yan Guimarares accompanied Dantas into the next round of the competition after securing runner-up position. Basque Country’s Aritz Aranburu and Australia’s Jay Thompson found themselves removed from the race for the event title after finishing in
third and fourth place respectively.
The top surfing talent from around the globe was competing for a piece of the generous winning prize and coveted Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) ranking points that were on offer at the fourth event on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals
(ASP) PRIME calendar. The surfing conditions had been quite cooperative with the event so far, sending glassy four-to-six foot waves towards the beach on the second day of the competition and thus providing surfers with plenty of potent scoring opportunities
to keep things interesting.
The 10th heat of Round 2 featured Dantas, Guimarares, Aranburu and Thompson in a four-man battle for the Round 3 spot.
Once the battle kicked-off, Dantas did not waste too much time to gain control of the heat. Locking a juicy left-hander in the opening minutes of the heat, the Brazilian surfer unloaded a series of exquisite tricks to post a 7.33 on the score-board and went
on to register a 6.07-point ride to finish with a heat-total of 13.40 points. The score kept him in the lead until the end to see him off to victory.
Guimarares finished in runner-up place after scoring a 6.33 and 5.73 off his best-two waves. The effort and eventual outcome turned out to be sufficient to take him through into the next round of the competition.
Aranburu finished third with a heat-total of 10.00 points, which included a 5.33 and 4.67-point waves, while Thompson ended the heat in fourth place with a two-wave total of 9.73 points. The third and fourth-place finish of the two surfers led to the elimination
from the latest ASP PRIME event.
