Michael Pachter one of many left unimpressed.
Analysts claim that the Nintendo Wii U has to take advantage of its unique controller and impress consumers early on if it wants to make an impression early on.
Nintendo’s E3 Media Presentation was described by many as ‘underwhelming’ and “lukewarm”, with many gamers leaving unconvinced that the Wii U would be their console of choice when it is released.
A number of triple-A titles such as Batman: Arkham City, Assassin’s Creed 3, ZombiU, Ninja Gaiden and Mass Effect 3 were revealed during the press conference yet a number of analysts including Arvind Bhatia and Brett Strauser, both analysts working at Sterne Agee, were left unimpressed.
“While the Wii U's user interface with the tablet controller is interesting, we didn't see many games taking advantage of the controller.” Said the analysts before continuing, "Most of the third party publishers we spoke to seemed to be lukewarm about the Wii U console. That said, Nintendo has always had the ability to surprise everyone."
So the controller is something that has potential yet as Colin Sebastian, a research analyst at Baird, put it so bluntly, “We did not see a clear 'killer app' for the core audience."
Renowned financial analyst, Michael Pachter from Wedbush, was also left wanting, but not in a good way, at the end of the Nintendo Presentation as he had hoped for more details on the first of the next generation consoles.
He summed things up when he said, "Overall, we were disappointed with the Nintendo presentation, as many key questions about the Wii U remained unanswered. We would have liked additional information on Wii U's technical specifications, release dates, and pricing."
So it seems that Nintendo has left everyone with less to get excited about than the developer would have hoped. However, it is still early days and Nintendo still has first-party exclusives such as Mario, the Legend of Zelda and Pikmin up their sleeves and it will be interesting to see how much attention their core franchises will be given as they look to target a new segment of consumers in the market.
