Wii U to outdo PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and FIFA 13 rumoured to be a launch title?
Nintendo are in a boisterous mood these days, after boasting that their upcoming next generation console, the Wii U, is capable of doing everything its rival current generation consoles can do and then some.
What is interesting about the news is; firstly, we now have to refer to Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 as the current generation of consoles, after terming them ‘next generation’ for so long, and secondly, whether or not Nintendo boasting
that their next generation console will be able to do everything the current generation can do is a good thing. Shouldn’t it be doing much, much more?
Luckily though this was not a one line headline, or a rumour spread on the internet as Andrew Wilson, Electronic Arts’ vice president, was on hand to elaborate.
He explained that although development was still in its early stages, that with developers starting to get to grips with the technology the Nintendo Wii U could not only match the current generation, something its predecessor, the Nintendo Wii, could not
(in terms of graphics and memory), but it could outdo them as well.
"I think that's our hope, but again we're still in the early stages. As every new piece of hardware and every new development library comes through we get a greater understanding of the power.”
The vice president continued by pointing out that early research on the output of the console was promising and that they would only be looking to keep pushing its capabilities.
When asked about online gaming capabilities of the Wii U, Wilson was enthusiastic in his response when he said that online gaming was "something that we're working very closely with Nintendo on. We are highlighting to them what we believe are the most important
elements to that infrastructure to deliver a connected experience that we think is the future of gaming.”
The prospect of EA working in collaboration with Nintendo on online gaming one could maybe expect to see a Battlefield instalment on the console in the future or maybe even a High Definition iteration of the popular Need for Speed franchise.
Wilson also confirmed that EA have representatives are actively working with Nintendo, but who could not give away any details on how far along they are in terms of development.
However, there is strong speculation linking FIFA 13 as a prospective launch day title for Nintendo’s next generation console, though at this point speculation is all anyone has to go on.
Gamers can expect much more news and updates on the Nintendo Wii as more information becomes available over the coming few months.
