Wii controller with gamecube game?

Can i play a gamecube game with the regular wii controller or do i need a gamecube controller

You can only play gamecube games with the gamecube controller that you plug in in the top of the wii.

The classic controller is only used for some wii tittles such as Brawl and some virtual console and wii-ware games.
