Wil Collins secures place at US Open through sectional qualifying event – Golf news
Wil Collins won the sectional qualifying event, held at the Tumble Creek Club in Cle Elum, after carding a two-under par score, which in turn, allowed him to secure a place in the US Open this year.
There were a total of two US Open spots on offer at the Tumble Creek and 38 players contended against each other to book their place in one of the most prestigious events in the world of golf.
The second major golf championship of the season is scheduled to be staged at the Pennsylvania’s Merion Golf Club from June 13 to 16, 2013.
Talking to the reporters after winning the qualifier, Collins said that it was really easy to score well at the venue course.
In addition to that, he also said that his ex-golf coach Dave Walters also helped him in improving his game, prior to start of the event, which allowed him to make accurate shots during the event.
“The course was really a bear,” Collins said. “What really did it for me was that on Saturday my old golf coach Dave Walters, ... he was up here and he helped me on Saturday and gave me two keys and I hit it pretty well in my practice round and then (Monday)
I hit it absolutely great.”
In 2009, Collins played on the PGA Tour, however, he failed to retain his card, courtesy of his below average performance during the season.
In 2010, he made his last appearance so far on the PGA Tour, when he participated in the Byron Nelson Classic. Since then, he has been playing on the Canadian Tour and now hopes to make his presence felt at the US Open.
“This is going to be nice to test my game at the championship level again and see where I’m at,” he said. “To be honest, there’s not a lot of pressure on me, so it’s going to be kind of nice to just go out there firing.”
Collins also qualified for the 2005 edition of the US Open, when he missed the cut. He now believes that his past experience will help him in performing better this year.
