  1. As long you have basic cable and Satellite service, your curent TV will work fine. In most cases the service providers will give you as rental or you can purchase HD receivers which have both HDMI , RCA outputs or 75 ohms RF output.

With HDMI you can use a newer HDTV and with the RCA or FR out puts, use your older TV set. I have both. I have an old TV in my bedroom connected to cable from cable companay and in the family room, I have bot cable and satellite receivers with HDMI connected to my HDTV and I can use either one. But I prefer the HD since I have the receivers and the TV.

  2. This is not a crazy question at all.  If your HDTV has an ATSC tuner in it (most do) just hook up a plain old TV antenna, select "antenna" on the menus and scan for channels.  I'll bet you get some.

Full power TV stations have had digital signals in the air since about 2002.  Many broadcast in HD during prime time, too.  Some stations are also transmitting sub channels that are not yet carried on cable so you will get some bonus channels!

http://www.antennaweb.org is a good resource.  Put in your address and it will tell you what digital stations are in your area and where to aim your antenna.

I hope this helps.  Please return and select a best answer from all of those submitted.
