Wilbert Uicab scheduled to defend his WBC silver flyweight gold against Edgar Sosa – Boxing News
Wilbert Uicab, the current WBC silver flyweight champion, will defend his precious gold for the fourth time against fellow countryman and current WBC International flyweight champion, Edgar Sosa, in a 12-round skirmish that will also decide as to who will
be the number one contender for Sonny Boy Jaro’s WBC flyweight gold.
The ring for the April 7, 2012 main event bout will be stretched at Oasis Hotel Complex situated in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico and the pay-per-view is being jointly promoted by Ricardo Maldonado of Producciones Deportivas and Jose Gomez of Cancun Boxing.
Wilbert and Edgar recently met at the weigh-in press conference put forth their thoughts and sheer determination in becoming the number one contender for the apex divisional gold.
Wilbert, 28, has accomplished much in his short career. The young lad had been in a total 41 bouts and emerged victorious in 33. Also known as the ‘Huracan’, Wilbert has collected 18 of his wins by knocking the opponent out cold.
His Saturday night opponent, Edgar Sosa is a heavy duty opponent who has been in a total 51 skirmishes. The veteran has collected 44 wins and 27 of them by brutal knockouts.
The 32-year-old is the former WBC light flyweight champion and has successfully defended it several times, 10 to be specific. The Mexican proud lost his gold in a battle with Rodel Mayol but instantly came back in the limelight by grabbing the WBC international
flyweight gold from Ryan Bito.
Since then Edgar has successfully retained the gold and this time will enter the ring not only for Wilbert’s title but also to become the number one WBC flyweight contender. Sosa has a clear upper hand in various significant aspects.
Edgar has the height and hence the substantial reach advantage against Wilbert which will enable him to throw powerful jabs from a safe distance. In addition, experience will also play its role. Above all, Sosa has fought many powerful and lethal pugilists
as compared to Wilbert.
During the weigh-in, Edgar commented, “I feel great and I trust my training. I have much experience and desire to be world champion again this year.” The young surging Wilbert, reiterated his resolve of becoming the champion and said, “Sosa and I have the
same conditions and the same pressure. We want to win and with the same desire so we can be sure it will be a difficult bout with the difference for me being fighting in front of my people. I will be champion.”
Edgar recently nailed Roilo Golez via technical knockout in the seventh round whereas Wilbert is coming from a unanimous decision loss to Toshiyuki Igarashi. Wilbert will strive hard to display his full might and use the hometown advantage at its fullest
but Edgar is a veteran and a former champion therefore a tough tooth and nail battle is definitely expected.
